About Compassion

Who We Are

As the world’s leading Christian child development ministry, Compassion Canada is committed to eliminating the root causes of poverty for children around the globe. Our passion and purpose reside in our unwavering commitment to our Lord Jesus Christ and the ability of His Church to execute his command to serve the poor.

Our Mission is to Children

In response to the Great Commission, Compassion exists as an advocate for children to release them from their spiritual, economic, social, and physical poverty and enable them to become responsible and fulfilled Christian adults.

Our Vision is Jesus Christ

We confess that Jesus is the Christ and He is Lord of our lives and of this ministry. Our love of Jesus compels us to love others as He commands and to honour Him in all that we do.

Our Commitment is to the Church

Compassion is a Christ-centred organization committed to the church. Jesus Christ is the great hope for the world and the church is God’s chosen instrument to advance the Kingdom of God. We mobilize and connect the global Body of Christ to fulfill her mandate for holistic discipleship of children in poverty.

Our Core Values

  • INTEGRITY: Christian integrity is aligning our thoughts, motivations, attitudes and actions with the ethical principles found in God’s Word. In both our personal lives and our ministry, what we believe, what we say and what we do should be consistent, congruent, reliable and transparent.
  • EXCELLENCE: Excellence is doing things God’s way – consistently doing everything that we are called to do with outstanding quality. We do the right thing…the right way…every time.
  • STEWARDSHIP: The ministry of Compassion belongs to the children, our Implementing Church Partners, our sponsors and donors, our Supporting Church Partners and ultimately to God. Therefore, we protect, develop and deploy all of our resources (people, time, money, knowledge, reputation and materials) with great care and wisdom.
  • DIGNITY: Each person is created in God’s image and bears God’s Likeness. Jesus treated everyone with respect and willingly gave His life for the redemption of all people. Therefore, all people are worthy of our respect and love.

Statement of Faith

  • WORD OF GOD: We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, fully inspired and without error in the original manuscripts, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and that it has supreme authority in all matters of faith and conduct.
  • THE TRINITY: We believe that there is one living and true God, eternally existing in three persons, that these are equal in every divine perfection, and that they execute distinct but harmonious office in the work of creation, providence and redemption.
  • GOD THE FATHER: We believe in God the Father, an infinite, personal spirit, perfect in holiness, wisdom, power and love. We believe that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men, that He hears and answers prayer, and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ.
  • JESUS CHRIST:  We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, and teachings. We believe in His substitutionary atoning death, bodily resurrection, and ascension into heaven, perpetual intercession for His people, and personal visible return to earth.
  • THE HOLY SPIRIT:  We believe in the Holy Spirit who came forth from the Father and Son to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment and to regenerate, sanctify and empower all who believe in Jesus Christ. We believe that the Holy Spirit dwells within every believer in Christ, and that He is an abiding help, teacher and guide.
  • REGENERATION:  We believe that all men are sinners by nature and by choice and are, therefore, under condemnation. We believe that those who repent of their sins and trust in Jesus Christ as Saviour are regenerated by the Holy Spirit.
  • THE CHURCH:  We believe in the universal church, a living spiritual body of which Christ is the head and all regenerated persons are members. We believe in the local church, consisting of a company of believers in Jesus Christ, baptized on a credible profession of faith, and associated for worship, work and fellowship. We believe that God has laid upon the members of the local church the primary task of giving the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a lost world.
  • CHRISTIAN CONDUCT:  We believe that a Christian should live for the glory of God and well-being of his fellowmen; that his conduct should be blameless before the world; that he should be a faithful steward of his possessions, and that he should seek to realize for himself and others the full stature of maturity in Christ.
  • THE LAST THINGS: We believe in the personal and visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ to earth and the establishment of His kingdom. We believe in the resurrection of the body, the final judgment, the eternal felicity of the righteous and the endless suffering of the wicked.

What We Do

Compassion’s child development approach is holistic, serving the spiritual, economic, social, and physical needs of a child. We accomplish this through our Child Development through Sponsorship Program. Our approach is augmented by our secondary initiatives – the Child Survival, Leadership Development, and Complementary Interventions programs.

How We Work

Compassion works in partnership with local churches in developing countries; providing resources, training and expertise to assist in the operation of holistic child development programs. Local churches are empowered to develop Compassion’s programs towards meeting the specific and individual needs of the children within their local communities.

Why is Church Partnership so important to Compassion?

Compassion's decision to partner with local churches is a strategic one: We believe local congregations are catalysts for community change and optimize the mutual respect, resources and common purpose that are critical in caring for children. When this kind of relationship takes hold, it's amazing how children come alive. We've found that one thing is always present when it does: Humility.

What does being a Compassion Church Partner look like?

Being part of Compassion's network of Church Parters is lived out in the local community by:
  • working together
  • listening to each other
  • going in the same direction
  • sharing equal amounts of responsibility

How does Church Partnership work?

Compassion church partnerships have flourished for many years — that's why we keep doing them.
Church partners receive curriculum support from Compassion, but they contextualize the interventions they provide the children they serve. Children in the sponsorship program participate in activities with the intention that they reach the following four outcomes upon graduation from the sponsorship program:
  • Child demonstrates commitment to the Lordship of Christ
  • Child chooses good health practices and is physically healthy
  • Child exhibits the motivation and skills to be economically self-supporting
  • Child interacts with other people in a healthy and compassionate manner
